Story board

We have created our storyboard to eventually help us with the construction aspect of our music video. We broke our shooting script down further to ensure we have a precise amount of shots when it comes to filmimg. We individually drew approximately 10/11 shots each, and put them together as a final piece:

Second draft shooting script

Today we made few changes to our shooting script, as we realised that we needed to break up a few of the shots so they are more precise.

Putting (a,b,c,d etc) by each of the numbers e.g. 2a, 2b shows that we have split individual shots into segments to make them more detailed and precise.

Bold - Song timing, shot number/location and camera angles etc
Italic - Content during that shot
Courier font - highlighting camera angles/intention for editing
Underline - names of cast

Requesting permission from Atlantic records.

The artist of the potential song we would like to use for our music video is Delilah, who is signed to the record company; Antlantic records.
We understand the copyright terms and conditions (see below) and that we must ensure we have atleast requested permission from the artist's record label.

The dictionary definition of Copyright is:
"the exclusive right to make copies, license, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical, or artistic work, whether printed, audio, video, etc.: works granted such right by law on or after January 1, 1978, are protected for the lifetime of the author or creator and for a period of 50 years after his or her death."

Meaning, by owning the copyright to a piece of music (e.g.) you have the right to produce as many copies of that piece of music as you choose. Also, you have the right to allow others to use your work, with a copyright licence. Without your consent, if a person were to use your material, it would be recognized as copyright.

Below is an email we sent to Atlantic records, requesting consent to use the song for profit and advertisement free purposes.

We immediately received a reply from Antlatic records:

However we are still waiting for clarification email offering permission from the company.

Downloading music for dance

Unfortunately, when it came to recording the dance as a group in the drama room, we didn't have the music we needed available as there were no computers/laptops around for us to find the song on YouTube. We were also struggling to find the song on YouTube off our phones and it meant that we couldn't record until the problem had resolved. I brought the song off iTunes so that it was saved in my music library and I could play it out loud whilst we record, and then mute the clip, so that the song could play over it. This proved to be a lot easier than potentially having to change the setting for recording the dance so that we could play the song off computers.

Shooting Script

Today we began our planning, starting with a first draft of the shooting script for our video. We understand that there may be necessary changes to the script when we consider other ideas or want to adapt the original ideas we have, therefore we are classing this as our first draft shooting script.

Choice of song

The song we have chosen for our music video is Delilah - Go.

We have chosen this song for the following reasons:

The relevance and lyric suitablitity to our new idea.
Since we have discussed our new video idea, we felt that this song in particular suited the genre we were aiming for. The mysterious 'vampire' theme suited the lyrics to this song as we discovered a subliminal purpose to the lyrics. For example:

Climbing up the walls (Trying to escape)

Banging down the doors
Knowing that you hear my scream (Screaming, powerless and suffering)

But oooh your love's so cruel (The power the male has over the girls and ability to be cruel/malicious)
You make wanna go, go, go, go, go oooh
Oooh all the things you do
You make me wanna go, go, go, go, go, go oooh

Captured effortlessly (Effortlessly captured by the male character)
That's the way it was (Out of their control)

We also really liked the atmosphere and tone created in the song. The pace of the lyrics that varies between slow to fast, creates an 'eerie' tone that accompanies our vampire theme suitably.

Target audience research

I have created a questionnaire based on the public's music taste. I have given the questionnaire to 10 males and 10 females of various ages, (in order to ensure the results would not be biased) - this will also allow me to precisely determine the target audience for the music video I am producing with my group.

Below is the questionnaire I gave out.

My research discovered that:

3 Females were aged 15-18, Three of which liked Pop music.3 Females were aged 19-22, Two of which liked Pop music, and 1 of which liked Drum and Bass.2 Females were aged 23-27, Both liked Indie music.1 Female was aged 28-30 and liked Classical music1 Female was aged 36-40 who liked Country. This proves that females within the age ranges of 15-18 and 19-22 like Pop music the most.
The research I gained from males proved that:5 males were aged 15-18, 4 of which liked Pop music and 1 of which preferred RnB.3 males were aged 19-22, 1 of which liked Pop music and 2 of which preferred House.1 male was aged 23-27, and 1 male was aged 27-30 - both of which liked Rock music. The final male I asked was aged 36-40 and liked Country music. This proves that the majority of males aged 15-18 liked Pop music - which is distinctively similar to 15-18 year old females. Therefore our target audience is prominently aged 15-18 however Pop music is also popular with the age range of 19-22 more than others. Finally, 7 out of 10 females and 6 out of 10 males said they prefer a video with an integration of both performance and narrative based aspects.

What makes a 'good' music video?

I believe that to make a music video that is going to appeal to a wide audience it's important to understand the public's point of view of what makes a music video good, or atleast what they prefer a music video to contain.
I gave this questionnaire to 30 people and narrowed down the results I received to an even number with an equal ratio between gender and age, which consisted of:
4 boys below 18
4 girls below 18
4 men 18-30
4 women 18-30
4 men 30+
4 women 30+
This is the questionnaire I produced:

The graphs below provide the statistics I gained from fourth question in the questionnaire:
"Please circle whichever of the following you prefer in a music video"
As you can see, having the artist included in the video was a preference that the public chose, although unfortunately as we intend on having a famous artist's song for our song, e.g. if we were to make a video to one of Taylor Swift's songs - it would be impossible to include Taylor Swift! However, as a group we intend on 'pretending' to be the band who have created the song, so it would be useful for us to be in the video too as I have learnt that this is what the public favour!
The graph below displays that, the majority of people I asked preferred music videos that consisted of a wide variety of people. This is fortunate for our research because we intend on being in the music video ourselves, whilst also potentially having other characters.
Similarly to the results above, the public also chose a variety of settings as their preference for music videos. We are going to ensure we film our music video in various places, to keep the viewers interested and to avoid a simplistic and repetitive video.

New music video idea

Change of music video idea

Although we have previously changed the idea we had for our music video, we have finally came to a solid idea that we are 100% sure on, that we all agree about and have an extensive amount of ideas for. We came to the conclusion that as much fun our idea for Carly Rae Jepsen, Call me maybe - may have been, despite our efforts to edit it efficiently, it would not help us achieve the grades we are aspiring towards.

As a group we came together on the 17th October and discussed the problems we were already facing with that idea. One of the most prominent of these was that it can possibly look too much like a 'fan video' that we have seen on YouTube; where a mass of fans of a band/artist individually record themselves supporting the band/singer whilst singing along to song lyrics. Which is precisely what our initial idea was.
However, this is not the only aspect of the video that encouraged us to change our mind, as we were also being let down by some of the cast list that we were asking. It was becoming difficult to depend on others for dates and times to record - and taking into consideration that this is our video and grade at risk, the last thing we wanted to do was depend on other people!

Finally, the lyrics to the 'Call me maybe song' for example, the chorus:
Hey, I just met you...and this is crazy, but here's my number, so call me maybe - seemed irrelevant to what we wanted our video content to be. Although we may have further considered the idea of people exchanging numbers in the video, that would only become repetitive and primarily lacked a further meaning or purpose - which is what we believe will be more imaginative and enjoyable to create, whilst helping us achieve the grades we are aspiring towards!

Music genre choice

Change in music video idea

The original idea myself, Jodie and Fran had for our music video has been replaced, with the idea of a montage style video. Whilst watching various music videos on TV and YouTube, we came together and agreed on the decision of a montage style video of ourselves, and our friends in a variety of settings miming the lyrics to our chosen song. Not only do we want to create our video from a slightly personal aspect, but we have found 'break up resulting in drugs/alcohol and party scene' music videos incredibly more stereotypical and popular in the recent music industry - which we want to avoid. Although this option would give us more videos to help our own ideas, we agreed a fun video incorporating our memories and experiences with those around us would attract a wider audience. Also, we found that watching music videos based on relationships and rebellion left us with a different impact to those featuring a variety of people enjoying themselves and miming along to the song playing. For example, watching the video to 'Example ft Skream - Shot yourself in the foot again' didn't leave us with the same upbeat happy style of mood that 'Duck sauce - Barbra Streisand' had. We want to make an impact on our viewers, and ultimately; get them involved, which is why our video will include a montage of:
- Friends and family joining in with the lyrics to our chosen song
- Our memories
- Birthdays
- Party's
- Events that make us happy

Music video ideas

The music video idea myself and my group have decided on follows the story line of a boy and girl in a relationship which takes a turn for the worst when the girl reads a text that reveals her boyfriend is being unfaithful. In result of this the girl turns to alcohol, drug abuse and wild partying to solve her issues...

What is a music video?

I thought that it was important for me to understand the meaning of a music video, as well as it's purpose. So I did a little research and these were my results, which helped me to understand my project.

Monday, 10 September 2012

During one of my Media lessons I was given the task of listening to a piece of music that I hadn't heard before (without watching the video) and creating an idea for a video relevant to the music I had heard. The music we listened to was by a band called Soundgarden called 'Black hole sun'. The idea I came up with with Fran Harris contrasted with the official video significantly, below is the idea we came up with: Set in the early 90's Soundgarden are playing on stage at a senior school prom. The music video opens as the camera focuses from a high angle on a boy and girl slowly dancing together at the prom. As the camera tracks and zooms into the couple, the music begins to develop and we recognize their intimate relationship. Eventually in the video there are a series of flash backs between the boy and girl and the relationship they have shared during high school; meeting, spending time together, falling in love... However, as the music becomes more fast paced, the characters grow older and begin to bicker and argue which is repetitively shown as flash backs on the video whilst the music is becoming similarly repetitive. Towards the end of the video when the music returns to it's slower pace as we heard at the beginning, we are taken back to the school prom where the boy and girl are dancing together. The video concludes with both the boy and girl driving in separate cars and going their separate ways to new colleges. After watching the official video to this song, you will notice that the idea above is very different, however also very relevant - as the era is accurate to when this song was produced - and the lyrics appear to be appropriate as the 'Black hole sun' metaphorically takes away the happiness and love shared between the teenagers.

Monday, 3 September 2012

The first video I am going to analyse is Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
The camera angles included in the opening of the video allow Lady Gaga to remain central to the people around her, although the opening shot is a wide shot featuring a lot of people, Lady Gaga appears to be a figure of authority as the camera tracks towards her. This similar central attention is featured whilst Lady Gaga is frozen with diamonds around her, as the camera pans around the room with Lady Gaga being the object of central attention. The authority Lady Gaga appears to have over the other dancers and the men she is dancing for is accentuated by the low angle shot which allows her to appear higher up and taller.
It is not only the camera angles which represent this idea, but also the mise-en-scene. The setting of the video is in a white room which appears cold and desolate, not only does this create a similar atmosphere but also a reflection of the people surrounding Gaga in white clothes. To highlight Lady Gaga's extravagance she wears gold whilst others are in white clothing, connoting her importance in contrast to the others who appear pure. The men in the video however, are wearing black; representing an evil dark side. Whilst the women dance synchronously the sound - particularly Lady Gaga's voice becomes less powerful and demanding when she sings 'want your bad romance' and in fact becomes softer, indicating a more sexual tone. The editing accompanies this mood as rather than being fast paced with flashing lights as we have seen in the remainder of the video, it focuses on a more placid notion. Lady Gaga's outfits throughout the video are very overstated and exaggerated, which suites the lyrics and herself as an artist.
A video that contrasts with this extraordinary theme is:
Gotye - Somebody that I used to know
This video is contrasts with Lady Gaga's significantly as it is relatively minimalistic including only two people; both performers of the song who are expressing their emotions through music amongst abstract art. The camera angles in this video remain specifically between head shots and shoulder shots, proving the video to be rather personal - which suites the lyrics distinctively. The mise-en-scene and prominent colour use in this video begins with white, signifying purity and a simplistic attitude however eventually the walls and people in the video become painted with pastel colours during their singing. Editing in the video is also very minimal, other than stock motion animation and relatively long lasting shots. The sounds in the video features a contrast of a male and female voice; male being low pitched and the females being high pitch - this could be a reflection of their contrasting opinions demonstrated in the lyrics. Neither the male or female are dressed, which similarly to the camera angles creates a personal and natural attitude. This music video proves that unlike Lady Gaga, it isn't always necessary to be extravagant to sell your music.

Monday, 27 August 2012

I have researched several music videos that have similar elements to what I intend on including in my own. Below is the music video to Professor Green -Remedy:

Example & Skream - Shot yourself in the foot again:

Rihanna - We found love:
Each of the three videos above feature elements that I want to include in my own video, few of these being:
- Relationships between a boy and girl
- Mixed emotions
- Party scene
- Teenagers/students/young adults
- Mild drug/alcohol abuse
The editing in these videos is also very fast paced, each shot is relatively short cutting from one another with flashing lights and bright colours - as you would expect at a party or night club.

Monday, 20 August 2012

To begin my A2 Media coursework, I have been asked to choose a brief between 14 options. One of the briefs that stood out to me was number 1:
'A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:'
- A website homepage for the band
